yet, but it is getting close. don knapp has been talking to nasa about the space junk's projectly. >> this image is in fact the falling satellite passing over southern california. nasa tells cbs 5 the bright spot of light was above l.a. at 7:45 this evening. a dead research satellite spins helplessly as it begins a fall from orbit that will start on a fiery plunge to earth, 20 years after it was sent to space. >> the rocket science precision that put the satellite up could not accurately predict where it would come down. >> it's coming into the atmosphere and it will drop debris some place on the planet. >> most will burn up in reentry, but some 2600 pieces about 1200 pounds of debris

expect to come down. >> brushed on the shoulder and that's the only one we know of that has ever been touched by a piece of raining debris. >> considering how much stuff is up there, that's a good record. >> well, there's 22,000 objects that nasa tracks alone. there are things bigger than a softball. things that they can track. smaller objects, you know, may be millions. >> all of it eventually will fall back to earth. nasa plans for the end times of satellites and ways to minimize its way to earth. >> control reentry and targeting an empty place on earth, specifically, or parking it in a graveyard orbit, that is an orbit further away from the earth where it can orbit for centuries. >> the satellite already entered the atmosphere and burned up 45 minutes ago in an area southwest of british columbia. it may be a few hours before they can confirm that the satellite our the pieces came down. >> so just as you said, it's

not coming down in one giant chunk. it's breaking down as it reenters. >> there would be big chunks, 1200 pounds of big chunks. some concern if you're in the area. but it looks like it will hit the ocean. >> it's fascinating to think about all the different factors and do the math on it and figure out where it might be. >> to think they figured out how to do the end game. they can let somebody 100 years from now worry about it. kick it don't road, as they say. >> thank thank you. thousands of people turned out to remember a well known bay area radio host who was carjacked and then killed. kit on how friends and family of cindy nguyen chose to celebrate her life. >> those who knew cindy nguyen best say she wouldn't have wanted anyone to cry tonight.

but her close friend apologized saying tonight she could not smile. >> keep one good thought with you right now. >> about 2,000 people came from as far away as arizona, texas, and france to reclaim the parking lot where cindy was carjacked. her son spoke for the first time about the kind of person he ever knew. >> so i urge each and every one of you to not be saddened or angered by the tragedy that struck her. instead, i want everyone to see the duty in what the community has created. >> paul eluded a police dragnet, an escape to west sacramento where he was arrested. police are still hunting for one accomplice. >> san jose is a safe community, although you need to pay attention to what's going on around you. >> it was repeated over and over again. san jose lost a mother, a daughter to us all. >> i feel really bad for her

and the family and also her coworkers. we love her. she's a wonderful lady. >> in the end, loved ones say the best way to honor cindy's memory is to remember the sense of community that was here tonight. in san jose, cbs 5. >> while they are good for the environment and save money, but energy efficient street lights can also be good for criminals. robert lyles on the bright idea that some say could curb the escalating violence in oakland. robert. >> dana, there are an estimated 37,000 street lights in the city of oakland and city council member says all of them too dim, but here in east and west oakland, far too many look like this. dead. so she wants the city council to do one thing, turn up the light. it's a 25-foot tall black eye above 34th avenue, but this street light isn't unsightly.

>> there are places in the city that are simply too dark. there isn't sufficient lighting to our minimum standards. >> brooks says city street lights were dimmed to save light pollution, but the move may have saved money, yet create the perfect stage in east and west oakland for criminal activity to take center stage. along international from 64th to 80th avenues, the city recorded its 54th and 67th murder victim this year. and police label these areas hot spots. >> i'm saying have the public works department go out in hot spots in east and west oakland, look to see if all of the hot spots have at least minimum lighting. >> if they don't -- >> light it up like it's christmas time. >> but what's done in the dark may have a hard time finding the light in east oakland. >> we spoke with several residents here at 34th and sullsbury. none of them wanted to speak on

camera. why? the minute we turn off our tv lights, they are plunged back into darkness and sitting ducks for criminals. the councilwoman admits there's been no city study on whether poor lighting breeds crime. we found some of the city's most vulnerable residents are leery new lights will offer them no new sense of security. >> i don't know. the main thing we need here is more person and police in our neighborhood. >> well councilwoman brooks says the assistant police chief weighed in and more light means less crime. the real question, can the city afford it in this age of light tightening? will the city counselors pay for brighter lights? day nay. >> dana. >> can the city not afford to do this? that's the question that people

are asking. >> that certainly will be one of outstanding questions. >> robert lyles, thank you. meantime, fremont police are using twitter to give the public a rare look inside their operations. the department is tweeting their calls until 2:00 a.m. they say anyone can get a glimpse of the emergencies they are dealing with by following fremont p. d. you can post your own emergencies or even ask questions. and checking on the bay area headline, the occupation of a berkeley building ended with two arrests. a couple of dozen people occupied tollman hall of the u c berkeley campuses. seven officers were injured. using some homemade shields. either the people arrested are students at cal. one day nurse's strike is over, but not all of the 20,000 people who walked out are going back to work. at least not right away.

cutter health and children's hospital in oakland told the nurses, don't come back until next week. the unions called it a lockout. the walkout centered on cuts in pay and benefits. and governor brown used the global headquarters of the gap as a backdrop for a bill signing. force online retailers to collect sales tax there california customers. it was a measure pushed by brick and mortar stores, but in a compromise, the government compromised. stop in san francisco to throw his support to the america cup race. port improvements needed to host the event and streamline development by cutting through red tape. >> put $40 million a year available for doing the

infrastructure. fixing up everything. so san francisco can take the lead in the world cup. >> the governor says the race will create about 8,000 jobs and inject more than a billion dollars into the local economy. the call on the carpet and accused of fraud. the short response from two area business executives grilled by members of congress about the failure of fremont's plan. and danger under foot. the laming discovery of what lurks in the soil of your backyard garden. answers about the corporation. company executives called to testify today had nothing to say. but lawmakers had plenty. >> it was an airtight scheme that trumps the bernie madoff scheme. >> i respectfully deny to answer any questions. >> received nearly a half a billion dollars in federal loans to launch the solar panel plant last year. it abruptly closed its doors last month just after reporting a surge in sales of it solar panels. nearly half of the 1100 employees layed off when solyndra shut down. organizers are looking to fill a thousand open positions at 38 companies. many of them competitors. layed off workers say they expect their skills are transferable to other high-tech industries. likely you know someone that turned their backyard into a garden.

elizabeth cook shows us the potential gardening danger that a lot of people never even think to look for. >> urban gardening, an idea that's growing. >> we are sitting on a third of an acre. a typical lot. i have 30 variety of berries, greens, artichokes, kale, tomatoes, pep pers. >> the entirety of this garden is a year and a half old. >> more impressive. >> this is my first garden. >> sits on land that used to be an orchard. about six miles away in the campbell village neighborhood, ubaka had gardening plans of her own, but they didn't sprout. >> they did a soil report. soil report came back very negative. there were toxic levels of lead. because of the level of contamination, it wouldn't be safe. very disappointed. >> life in the east bay hills

doesn't just include stunning views, it also comes with some good earth. but it's a different story and many of the regions older neighborhoods. >> up in the hills, we are seeing 50 parts per million. that's what is expected in the natural environment. the oldest part in west oakland has lead oils high. >> he was working on his phd. he checked for lead at more than 100 different sites in alameda county. in some places, he found a lot of it. >> in the older parts of the city, lead levels four times when you are finding in the rest of the city. >> that lead comes from years of industrial use. freeways that spewed leaded gasoline fumes well into the 80s and a more potent source. >> the density of old houses. houses before 1940, lead was used as a pigment in paint. any time someone was painting a house, those particles would drift. >> that brings us back to the

gardening boom. city slicker farms help families start gardens free of charge. as you might expect, there's no shortage of interest. >> greens mostly, i think. less lettuce and tomatoes. >> i think three different holes for each sample. nobody thinks about what can be in their foil and how it can affect. >> too much lead, no garden. the results are not always a deal breaker. you can fix the soil by planting things like sunflowers that will pull the lead out. >> this is a raised bed planter. fill that up with soil and compost and you are good to go. >> the key, know your dirt before you get dirty. >> what we really need is more education. how to garden responsibly and safely. >> do it right and the payoff is sweet. >> how we can process all the food made here is insane. >> in oakland, cbs 5.

reporting tonight that actor sean penn was instrumental in helping when the released of shane bower and josh. convinced venezuelan president to appeal to his friend and ally, mahmoud ahmadinejad. meanwhile, bower and his fiance became officially engaged today during a ceremony in aman. the pair actually got engaged in prison when bower gave showard a ring made from shirt threads. no word when the group will return to the united states. rita moreno is an actress that won every major acting award that you can think of. now the accomplished actress is playing the role of her own

way in underneath the golden gate bridge and on top of it as well and then swallowing the bay as it goes in an easterly direction. this is the forecast for tonight. coastal clouds, bay side as well. 55 to 59 degrees tomorrow. it's going to cool down everywhere. 63 to 78 degrees. that's a huge jump. or drop, i should say as far as our numbers are concerned. this is an area of low pressure. that is promising to bring us at least a chance of rain into our forecast by sunday. meanwhile, we have been monitoring that. dry lightning is still a possibility with a red flag warning in effect for san bernito. let's review this, because there's a lot of information out there. that red flag warning is in effect tonight. we will see relief inland as far as the temperatures are concerned. rain is possible on sunday. everywhere, but primarily north

of the golden gate bridge until the system slides to the south. one computer model suggests maybe a quarter of an inch of rain. 57 degrees in pacifica for saturday. 84 in livermore. down from 101 degrees. additional cooldown takes place on sunday with that threat of rain showers and high pressure rebounds on monday at 84 degrees. otherwise, we are talking about temperatures back into the low 90s on tuesday through friday. that is your autumn pinpoint forecast. here is kim with sports. >> the a's play spoilers against the angels and babe weeks goes deep again and what a difference a year makes. there's a new nl west champion. the minute is next. ,,,,
